Overview: When Barbara Gordon was growing up, she wanted to be just like her dad. She learned how to defend herself, studied law and computer science with the goal of becoming a policewoman or an attorney-at-law. She wanted to protect the innocent and stop the bad guys from harming said innocents. She was an upbeat girl full of life.. and still is. This is Barbara before Batman, before Batgirl, before the accident that changed everything, before Oracle, before the Birds of Prey, before becoming Batgirl again (don't ask). This is Barbara Gordon, and she's just kind of a nerd, but that doesn't mean she can't kick your ass into next Tuesday.

History
Barbara Gordon was born to James Gordon and Barbara Eileen Gordon in Chicago. When she was only five years old, they moved to Gotham City when her father transferred to the Gotham Police Department. She grew up idolizing her father and wanted to be an officer of the law just like him. She trained hard and studied harder, finding herself having a far above average intelligence level. After graduating highschool, she got accepted into Gotham U where she studied law.
Three years after she was born, her brother came into being. Growing up together, she always felt something was off about him. He talked little, had no friends, and she would often find the corpses of animals James Jr. had strangled or knifed to death. She afraid of him and even more afraid to tell her parents about him. Only when he went off to some far off boarding school did she feel relieved.
The rest of her childhood was fairly normal. Her mother grew derpressed after the revelantion about her son and grew distant from both her daughter and husband. It wasn't long before she left them both completely, never to appear before them again.
Barbara eventually graduated from school and began to attend Gotham University, studying both Criminal Law and Computer Sciences with the explicit goal in mind of become a police officer or at least a really good attorney.
During college, rumors of a vigilante in black sweeped the city, the press had nicknamed him "The Batman." Though he broke the law, Barbara become very interested in him, after all he did fight crime, the same as her dad. She then began to prowl the streets at night, camera and binoculars in hand, hoping to catch just a glimpse.
